History

The land that is now Mitchell Park was originally part of the Rancho Rincon de San Francisquito, a Mexican land grant, and later became agricultural fields in the Mayfield township. After Mayfield’s annexation by Palo Alto in 1925, the area remained rural until the post-World War II housing boom. The City of Palo Alto acquired the parcel in the early 1950s and established Mitchell Park, named after a prominent local family. The original park included a small library, a community building, and basic sports fields.

A transformative redevelopment began in 2011, when voters approved funding for a new library and community center. The modern Mitchell Park Library and Community Center, designed by Group 4 Architecture, opened in December 2014. The 38,000-square-foot facility earned LEED Gold certification and features a striking curved roof, extensive natural light, and flexible community spaces. In 2015, the Magical Bridge playground opened as the first fully inclusive playground of its kind in the region, designed by Olenka Villarreal. The playground has since become a national model for inclusive play. The community garden, dog park, and upgraded sports fields were added in subsequent years, completing the park’s evolution into a 21st-century community hub.
